Carmel Beach, California
Carmel Beach, California
W/C Carmel Beach, California was quite dramatic on this winter day. The foreboding storm clouds were offset by the sea gulls on the beach.
Artists Note: My father, Craig Smith, and I painted together. We were both represented by the Cottage Gallery in Carmel and this was a delightful place to paint.

Dolphins
Dolphins
W/C Dolphins off Kaikura, New Zealand Dolphins are fascinating to watch and appear so playful and curious about humans. This group at Kaikura were especially whimsical. There are several areas in New Zealand were you can swim with the dolphins. I hope on a return visit to be able to observe them even closer. This was my second deployment to ChristChurch, New Zealand and Antarctica. When not on the ice I had time to paint and explore the South Island of New Zealand. It is quite spectacular. This time I was on the C-17 and we had spectacular views of the ice flows, the ice breakers and Mt Aribus around McMurdo station. On my first trip I spent three weeks as a flight surgeon for the USAF based out of ChristChurch. I took care of the flight crews and had the experience of being part of the cockpit crew of a C141 as we landed at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. We had two navigators as well as three pilots who constantly checked our position, winds, weight as we approached the PNR or PSR (point of no return or point of safe return) where we would have to turn back if our fuel consumption was too great. There was no place to land from the PNR to McMurdo if we ran out of fuel. The penguins walked 30-50 miles from the coast just to look at the airplanes out of curiosity!

Portrait of a Young Boy
Portrait of a Young Boy
W/C Portrait of a young boy, Bordeaux, France. Commissioned by Anthony’s parents, I was intrigued to paint this fascinating cafe scene of their 10 year old son. I believe that I captured the reflective, day-dreaming state that is quite endearing.

Artist note: I was deployed with the USAF at the Spanish Base Aero de Moron. It was there that I met Anthony’s parents and thoroughly enjoyed my visit with them.

Nana
Nana
W/C NANA was painted as a commissioned. The boat was also commission and is owned by Garry Adalian. It was custom built at Constable's Boat House in England in 1988. The design is an exact replica of the 1890's Thames Rowing Skiff's. There are paintings of that period of boating on the Thames around Henley. Gary and Vera rowed her on a three day trip from Oxford to Henley for her maiden voyage. Built of African mahogany on oak frames, fastened with copper roves, she is sturdy as well as beautiful. The painting is on Opening Day of the Coronado Yacht club May 2009. The theme was 'Springtime', thus the flowers. The boat was named after Garry’s Grandmother who raised him. This painting is a thank you for all the loving support he has showed Estelle Smith.

Let There Be Music
Let There Be Music
W/C The title was inspired by my daughter, Victoria’s first quartet with that name. Her quartet played all around town and inspired me to start playing again. This is a very special violin. My first violin was stolen while I ate lunch in San Francisco in 1969. Although my son and daughter play the violin, I didn’t get back to it until 2006 when I was able to afford another violin with a beautiful tone. This violin was made in 1902 in Prague, Czechoslovakia by John Fuzeh and has a golden tone. It was lovingly restored by Rafael Carrabga in Seattle. It is so beautiful that even my playing is music to my ears. It is time to honor it.

The Majestic Bald Eagle
The Majestic Bald Eagle
W/C A magnificent bald eagle is seen sitting on a snag at Fox Cove, Sucia Island in the San Juan Islands of Puget Sound. The bald eagle is the only eagle unique to North America. Alaska, British Columbia, and the Northwest Coast of North America is the greatest stronghold for bald eagles. They flourish in part because of the salmon. My husband and I watched hundreds fish for salmon along the Chilikat River at Haines, Alaska.
While sailing on our 29ft Islander “Paloma”, my husband and I spent a few spectacular days on Sucia and I just had to paint this eagle as it watched and hunted.
