Brugge, Belgium
Brugge, Belgium
W/C Brugge is a fascinating medieval city, but unlike the half-timbered buildings of Germany, they are mostly stone. It was intriguing to see the very wide avenues/streets. This was unusual for most cities of the time. As usual, I was fascinated by the canals and reflections. This was a sunny day in January and later that day it began to snow. We wondered through the town and of course enjoyed the Belgium truffles.

Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen, Denmark
W/C Copenhagen, Denmark- This is the area where the fishing fleet docks. The colorful buildings, outside cafes and walks along the quay are wonderful for capturing in paint. This was the starting point for one of my sailing voyages on America’s Tall Ship, the USCG Barque Eagle.

Boscastle, England
Boscastle, England
W/C Boscastle is thought to be the site of King Arthur’s castle. This charming cottage was at a small harbor. The English cottage gardens are a delight to behold. They always appear to be so casual (easy) and yet require much diligence to maintain. The children were enamored with this area. My father and I did numerous painting trips through Cornwall and Devon.

St. Ives, England
St. Ives, England
W/C St. Ives, Cornwall, England- The tides out, the reflections on the wet sands and the boats on their sides provided inspiration for this painting. St. Ives was immortalized in the nursery rhyme. It is also an artist colony in Cornwall. Cornwall is the "English/Cornish Riviera" as it has the most sun and changeable weather in England. The fishing villages of Cornwall are always intriguing to paint. Of course wandering through the villages and painting is also fascinating.

Gibralter
Gibralter
W/C Although Gibraltar is famous for its strategic location, I found the rock and the monkeys that live on the rock, during this visit in late spring also interesting. I found the town charming and fascinating to paint. Of course it has a distinct British influence to the village.
Artist note: I was deployed with the USAF at the Spanish Base Aero de Moron, near Seville. This provided a wonderful opportunity to paint in Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and Morocco

Doges Palace, Venice
Doges Palace, Venice
W/C The Doges Palace at the Pont de Paglia in Venice Italy is quite dramatic. The front opens on St. Mark’s square. The palace is connected to the prison by the Bridge of Sighs. The warm earth tones of the buildings lend themselves to watercolor. My family and I spent a number of Spring vacations in Venice. Usually I painted the back canals, but this day I was enamored by the palace.

Bridge of Sighs, Venice
Bridge of Sighs, Venice
W/C Venice, Italy- The Bridge of Sighs ( the 2nd or distant bridge) connects the Doge Palace with the prison. It derives its name from the prisoners led across from their trial in the Doge Palace to prison/death; they were often heard to sigh as they had their last look at Venice through the windows. The many canals, gondolas and of course fascinating architecture are always a delight to paint. The curve of the gondola is unique and allows it to be propelled and steered at the same time with a single oar. My family and I spent 2 spring school breaks vacationing here. Spring in Venice is beautiful-few tourists. I would get up early and paint. While painting along the canals, the Venetians would often throw open a window and start singing-very inspiring.

Sante Maria de la Salute, Venice
Sante Maria de la Salute, Venice
W/C Spectacular view of the church from across the Grand canal. The play of light on this classic architecture was quite compelling. I love painting white buildings because the shadows lend themselves to an infinite variety of warm or cool colors. Of course the reflections in the canal and the romantic Gondola were equally enchanting.

Church of the Ascension, St. Petersburg Russia
W/C St. Petersburg, Russia-The Church of the Ascension is situated on one of the many canals in St. Petersburg.
